The most obvious consequence is that WT moved to another domain. From inwalthamstow.co.uk to walthamstowtimes.co.uk.

We feel this is the right thing to do for so many reasons, the most important being the name; the domain name it just had to correspond with the title, making it easier to remember for the users and more relevant for search engines and readers.

What else?

We started hosting our media files on a subdomain, to have a better control over the storage directories and keep the loading times to a minimum. While we tried our best not to cause any interruptions on the process, please accept our aplogies if you had any trouble while navigating on WT pages and reading the articles.

Meanwhile there was testing, testing, backing up, more testing and redirections.

Here we are now, on our (old) new home. Satisfied, I’d say.

WT will soon release new updates about the project and we’ll really need your attention and participation.

Keep the good events coming and keep going out to see them and participate.

Don’t forget to Like us on FB and Follow on Twitter.
Views :39 © Walthamstow Times | http://walthamstowtimes.co.uk
© Walthamstow Times | http://walthamstowtimes.co.uk

I choose media that enable me to explore and expose the issues that interest me. My primary media are, perhaps, walking, recording and researching, which I synthesise into visual works. As I am troubled by wastefulness, I try to limit the environmental impact of my own production.
I tend towards painting, though I have also worked in digital media, photography, video and textiles. I seek to minimise the amount of material I consume, increasingly concentrating on small labour-intensive objects. (Fiona McGregor on footworks.me.uk)

Thursday 17th of May comes with an intriguing after hours film at the Screen17, “The skin I live in“, an Almodovar signature with plenty of symbols and non-judgemental directing meant to last weeks in your mind after you’ve finished watching. The director tries for a difficult genre and it pays off.

The Skin I Live In” becomes an example of technically proficient filmmaking which works alongside the performances of the likes of Antonio Banderas and Elena Anaya, as well as the slickly written script which keeps the audience on their toes until the final curtain has been dropped. Pedro Almodovar is undoubtedly one of the most successful auteurs of the last few decades, and with ‘The Skin I Live In’ he shows that he can almost touch upon a new genre, in the form of body horror genre-hybrid, whilst also retaining all the previous elements, themes and techniques which have made his films the deep-seated critically successful films that they are.
The story: Pippin becomes a soldier for his father’s army, but is upset by the killing and murders his father to stop the war. Now King, he is even more lost and unsure about what he wants in life and turns away from everything, including love, before discovering that what he has been searching for has been there all along.

College’s biggest production to date, it is a fast paced romp delivered with boundless energy by the cast. Colourful, warm, dynamic and fun! A perfect summer production suitable for everyone over 12 > who is young at heart. It will leave you with a big smile on your face!

With music and lyrics written by Stephen Schwartz and choreography and direction by Bob Fosse, the music, costuming and set design are extremely unconventional; however, when audience members allow themselves to look deeper than what’s on the surface, they will find this story is extremely complex and contains a much deeper meaning.
It could be about those phone calls you never made, or the time you never took to express your feelings like you knew you should. Or maybe because you know that friendship doesn’t exist by itself and it needs time and kindness invested in it so it can continue to function.

It could be the most thankful and romantic letter to your wife or husband and it’s the perfect excuse to do it now.

I know for me it would be about my mom and the surprise she’ll have when a typed letter from me will arrive in the mail box; I’ll explain why the not-often-enough calls and how Walthamstow Marshes filled many of my afternoons. I’ll tell her that I’ve found the pub in Leyton where Iron Maiden got together even though she’ll say “Wow, great! Who’s Iron Maiden?” when I’ll call her next time.

While I’ll type I’ll have a cookie and anticipate how she’ll get through the letter.

At first she’ll be worried, I haven’t sent her a letter since secondary school, then she’ll laugh I typed it instead of writing it by hand and by the end she’ll miss me more than ever thinking it’s been years since she hasn’t read a letter and I’m far from her and maybe I haven’t told her the whole truth when I said I’m fine and things are good.

Whatever your reason may be and however you think you should put it in writing The Strange Fruit

Shopette invites you to take your time and write a letter while enjoying a cup of tea and a cookie.

You can’t keep a tweet, a text or an email in a box can you? This is why we are joining the ‘save the letter writing revolution’ and hosting a letter writing club at the shopette.

Once a month (on the first Thursday of every month) you can come along and a write, or type, YES we have typewriters, a letter. Maybe you could let your Grandmother know what you’ve been up to or to say ‘Hi’ to an Uncle overseas. It’s so easy to forget not everyone is connected by social media and well lets face it where would we be without the letters of Lewis Carroll, Ludwig van Beethoven and Victor Hugo?

As you know the shopette is weeny so we will all squish in round a table with a cup of tea, from a vintage teapot and a slice of home baked cake to write to letters to loved ones that can be kept forever; stashed away in a drawer or a shoebox. Just bring yourself and a stamp.

Drop in when you get off work, Thursday 3 May 2012 – 6.00pm – 8.00pm.

Leytonstone’s Stone Space gallery is delighted to host ‘Defiance‘ a striking exhibition of work by 5 Palestinian artists from Gaza in conjunction with Arts Canteen. Opening in April 2012 the exhibition will present work which illustrates the determination of five artists to overcome the environment in which they work while simultaneously being inspired and challenged by it.

The exhibition will be from Thursday 19 April until Sunday 6 May with a private view from 7pm on the 19th April. This is a free event.

All five artists are emerging talents in the Middle East. Each artist – Majed Shala, Shareef Sarhan, Nidal Abu Oun, Raed Issa and Mohamed Abusal – tells their own story: the conscious choice to use vivid colours, the hopeful form of a pregnant woman or the playful and detailed depiction of symbols such as the cactus – symbolic of endurance – or using the shapes identified with traditional calligraphy but which are never resolved into meaningful text.

The artists’ power is evident as they transform ugliness and despair into beauty and light as the mundane forms of concrete, satellite dishes, asbestos roofs and washing lines are presented to us.

Arts Canteen is a London based cultural venture. Its aim is to build artistic relationships between the Arab world and Mediterranean. It provides platforms for emerging and mid-career artists who create exciting contemporary visual art and music.

All art works will be for sale.

This exhibition celebrates the determined agency of five artists to overcome the environment in which they work while simultaneously being inspired and challenged by it. The very contemplation of creating a work of art in Gaza is an act of defiance. The fact that it is exhibited here in London is an act of defiance, as is the mode in which London audiences may interpret it.

Each artist tells their own story: the conscious choice to use vivid colours, the hopeful form of a pregnant woman or the playful and detailed depiction of symbols such as the cactus – symbolic of endurance – or using the shapes identified with traditional calligraphy but which are never resolved into meaningful text. The artists’ power is evident as they transform ugliness and despair into beauty and light as the mundane forms of concrete, satellite dishes, asbestos roofs and washing lines are presented to us.
